The brighter the light, the larger the shadow that’s cast. Shades of light and dark, polarities of good and bad and dualistic principles, I believe, are contained in the terms used by Steiner as sympathy and antipathy. To avoid being drawn into either polarity means to live within the tension that creates – something that requires a great deal of awareness and present-centred consciousness. We are ‘naturally’ drawn to ‘is’ or ‘is not’ and to sit in the tension of neither (or all) can be experienced as the void that is annihilating, yet can become liberating.
